Like most marketers that have been shaking the tree for a while, I have seen a thing or two. And I don’t know if this is some kind of existential crisis, middle age, or genuine fatigue, but my point of view of marketing is shifting and changing.
I feel like we’ve started making decisions on what’s worth saying, how to say it, and at what cost is it viable that is influenced more by shipping marketing than it is making it effective.
This might be some Gen X reaction to automation, AI, and feeling my hand wither on the controls as younger, hungrier, more tech-savvy marketers take my place. Or perhaps, it is precisely because the blinkers are finally off this old marketing horse I can see what we’re doing.
My hypothesis is this:
Shipping at speed is diluting content.
It’s making us feel more under pressure, more stretched, more harried.
And we’re not benefitting.
Will we swing back past the nonsensical videos that no one can recall back to something meaningful?
Or will we be squeezed into obscurity by platforms eager to take our place in social media content generation?
Can we realistically recover from trends in marketing that encouraged us to go for mass appeal only to find the reach and the interest waning?
These are the questions (and more) that I feel compelled to answer.
I started writing this newsletter because I thought I could have honest conversations and attract clients that way. I am a freelancer, and we can be delightfully naïve that way.
Instead, I feel increasingly as though I need to sound a warning bell. Or at least, ring a bell to invite creativity back in. I’ve seen too much in the last decade and a half of freelancing and years of agency life and in startups before that to go quietly.
But whether I end up sounding like an old woman yelling at the holograms of clouds as they whisk on by or I am catching the vibe of the current times, I guess is open to your interpretation.
But if you want to sign up and come along for the ride, I am happy to have you.
